INTERVIEW WITH MRS. JACQUI KOON HOW
An interview was conducted with Mrs. Jacqui Koon How on 14 th March, 2007.
Mrs. Jacqui Koon How, of the “House of Jacqui” taught English and Art at St. Benedict’s College. Then, she traveled to Canada to further her knowledge of art, but got ill and had to return home. She later obtained a job as a ‘fashion buyer’ and got an opportunity to hold a fashion show. She realized that models were lacking something and said she ‘kind of fell into it’.
- How long have you been in this business?
41 years
- And what exactly is it that you do?
Well, there is not really a name for what I do, but I call myself a fashion consultant.
- Do you find what you do beneficial to you personally?
I find it fulfilling. It is something I enjoy. However, it is never financially enough (laughs). But it is beneficial, because I enjoy it and there are perks that go along with the job.
- Do you believe that what you do has an impact on the culture of South Trinidad?
Well, yes I do. What I do has an impact on different aspects of culture. We do a personality development course where we train 20 women per year; multiply that by 41 and see how many people we have trained to become better young women. We have touched the lives of many women. Also, through fashion we are able to assist many groups and give to charity. We get to represent Trinidad in different Caribbean countries and outside in the world. We are considered ambassadors in our own way.
One thing that stood out to me was her statement:
”The catwalk is my canvas,”
When asked if she missed doing art.
