This is on the Petrotrin Guayaguayare Compound, situated on the Eastern bank of the Pilote river about 150 ft off the road before the Pilote Bridge on the road to Abyssinia just before the Navet field road junction.
Well #1 was the 1st. productive oil well in Guayaguayare. It was as a result of the exploratory ventures of Major Randolph Rust, after oil was discovered via a National seepage somewhere in the Guayaguayare forest by a hunter. After partnering with commercial entities the 1st. well was drilled in1901-1902 by drillers and engineers Mosher and Power to a depth of some 990 ft with the pool and tool technology. Petroleum production in this region opened and developed due to this exploration and is to this modern time recognized as part of this country’s gas and marine operations. Take note that oil production in Trinidad predates the advent of oil production in the USA when Drake discovered their 1st. productive well in Pennsylvania.
Well #1 is marked presently by a painted sign and a small pump. It is fenced to keep out intruders but sadly one can see that it’s significance is downplayed and this is something which should urgently be addressed .
