 Intruder Shot On School Compound

The safety and security of staff and students at all schools remain a top priority of the Ministry of Education. This assurance came in light of a confrontation involving an intruder and Police officers on the compound of the Barataria South Secondary School.

Police reports indicated that at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Friday 6th September, 2019, a male intruder entered the compound and began behaving erratically. The male MTS security officer confronted the intruder, however, he was unsuccessful in his attempt to remove him from the compound.

Subsequently the Barataria Police Station was contacted and officers responded promptly but were also unable to reason or restrain the man, resulting in a physical altercation, which lead to the intruder being shot by the Police. The injured intruder was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Students, upon their arrival were briefly addressed by the Principal after which the  school was dismissed at 9:30 a.m. to facilitate the Police investigation.

A staff meeting was later held to underscore the importance of observing protocols and procedures during incidents of this nature. A crisis management meeting was also held to review the day’s incident and to reinforce the importance of observing proper protocol and procedures in such cases.

The Ministry of Education will continue to do all that is necessary to ensure that teachers and students of all schools remain safe.
