Inaccuracies with newspaper article ‘No access to education for 882 students’ (Trinidad and Tobago Guardian 8/10/2020)

The Ministry of Education wishes to clarify misleading information that was published in the Trinidad Guardian on Thursday 8th October 2020. The article highlighted and outlined information that was inaccurate and sought to diminish the efforts of the hard-working teachers of the schools identified in the article. According to the article, the following schools were identified as experiencing challenges with curriculum delivery to their respective student populations:

  1. Cedros Anglican
  2. Cedros Government
  3. Granville Roman Catholic
  4. Icacos Government
  5. Lochmaben Roman Catholic
  6. Southern Central Anglican
  7. Cedros Secondary

The article also went on to state issues or challenges being faced by the schools such as:

  • Students are unable to access online schooling due to either the lack of internet connectivity or reliability of service
  • Students are unable to receive weekly printed packages because schools have run out of materials to do printing and copying

The Ministry of Education’s School Supervision and Management Division immediately investigated these claims through the principals of the schools identified. The table below shows relevant information regarding students’ access to teaching and learning as provided by the schools principals.

It should be noted that both Cedros Government and Icacos Government Primary Schools received stationery supplies on Tuesday 6th October, 2020 to support the printing and copying of packages for students. The table indicates that six (6) students of Southern Central Anglican School are not accessing schooling. The school’s principal has indicated that attempts to contact parents/students via telephone/mobile have proved futile. As a result, the students have been referred to the Student Support Services Division and the help of the Community Police has been solicited.

At Cedros Secondary there are 17 students not accessing education through online or printed packages at this time. Of these, one parent indicated that their child would not be accessing Home Based Learning. The Principal of Cedros Secondary reported that supplies for printing packages are adequate and equipment for printing is operational. Data collected indicated that at Cedros Secondary 217 students have connectivity and 176 have access to a personal electronic device (of which 120 is a smartphone).

The Ministry of Education is not opposed to facilitating any concerns or queries that may arise as it pertains to students and access to education in Trinidad and Tobago. To this end, persons are encouraged to seek valid and accurate information from the Ministry of Education.
